Understanding Hip Pain & How It’s Treated
At Catalyst Chiropractic & Rehabilitation, we help you live free of pain. As we age, we often develop pain in our joints and muscles, and hip pain is one of the more common conditions we deal with here at our Minnesota Chiropractic Clinic. Many doctors will prescribe powerful pain medication and send patients for surgery to deal with hip pain. At Catalyst Chiropractic, we help our patients find other minimally invasive hip pain treatment options as opposed to surgery and pain medication.
What Are the Common Causes of Hip Pain?
There are quite a few common causes of hip pain, a few of which we’ll discuss below:
- Overuse – One of the most common causes of hip pain is overuse. Wear and tear on the hip joint and the cartilage surrounding the joint can lead to inflammation and arthritis. Daily activities that put extra stress on the hip can also lead to increased inflammation of the ligaments, tendons, and muscles surrounding the hip. All of this can cause hip pain to increase gradually over time.
- Inflammation – Hip pain can occur in the joint itself as well as in the tissue and ligaments surrounding the joint. The space within the joint can become filled with fluid or blood, which can cause pain due to inflammation. There is also a sac outside the hip called bursitis which can cause hip pain when it becomes inflamed. Often, individuals dealing with hip pain refer to the inflammation as bursitis.
- Inflammatory Diseases – As we age, we can develop inflammatory diseases such as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of hip pain. This condition is due to the gradual loss of cartilage and joint degeneration around the hip. Other inflammatory diseases that may contribute to hip pain include inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or spine inflammation, also known as ankylosing spondylitis.
Chiropractic Treatments for Hip Pain Relief
When you meet with a chiropractic doctor, they can perform a thorough examination to help determine the source of your hip pain. This examination includes a detailed consultation with you to discuss any familial history contributing to your hip pain. Once a consultation has been completed, a comprehensive treatment plan will be suggested, which includes some of the treatment methods listed below:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Stretching
- Massage therapy
- Exercise
- Physical therapy
- Neurostimulation therapy
- Acupuncture
The goal at Catalyst Chiropractic & Rehabilitation is not just to mask your symptoms or refer you to a surgeon for a hip replacement but to find the root cause of your hip pain. By finding the root cause of your hip pain, we can devise a treatment plan that reduces, if not eliminates, your pain without introducing invasive treatment options such as surgery or addictive pain medications.
