Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn from Catalyst Chiropractic And Rehab here in Blaine, Minnesota, and today we’re talking about something that I genuinely hear about almost every single day in my office. Neck tension. Shoulder tightness. That dull ache that creeps in somewhere around two or three in the afternoon — and just doesn’t leave. If you’ve got a desk job, or really any job where you’re sitting and looking at a screen for hours, this episode is for you.

So let’s start with the big question. Is your desk job actually causing that tension? And the honest answer is — yes, it very likely is. But not for the reason most people think. It’s not just about sitting. It’s about how you’re sitting, and how long you’re staying in one position without moving.

Here’s what’s happening in your body. When you sit at a desk and lean toward your screen — even just a little bit — your head shifts forward. Now, your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds. That’s a lot of weight. And the further it drifts in front of your shoulders, the more stress it puts on the muscles and joints in your neck and upper back. Some estimates suggest that for every inch your head moves forward, the effective load on your neck can multiply dramatically. So what feels like a small posture habit is actually putting a significant strain on your spine throughout the entire day.

And then there are your shoulders. Think about what your arms are doing right now if you’re at a desk. They’re probably reaching forward toward a keyboard or a mouse. That position causes the muscles in the front of your chest to shorten and tighten over time, while the muscles across the back of your shoulders get overstretched and fatigued. That combination — tight in the front, weak and strained in the back — is one of the most common patterns I see walking through my door.

Now here’s what’s interesting. The pain you feel at the end of the day isn’t always coming from where you think it is. A lot of people feel tension right at the top of the shoulders — that ridge of muscle between your neck and your shoulder blade. That area is working overtime trying to support your head and stabilize your arms all day long. It gets exhausted. And exhausted muscles become tight, tender muscles.

So what can you do starting today? A few simple things can make a real difference. First — move more often. Set a reminder on your phone to stand up and change positions every thirty to forty-five minutes. Even thirty seconds of movement helps reset your muscles and your posture. Second — bring your screen up to eye level if you can. Looking down at a laptop all day is one of the biggest contributors to neck strain that I see. Third — do a quick chin tuck throughout the day. Gently pull your chin straight back — like you’re making a double chin — hold it for a few seconds, and release. It sounds simple, but it helps reposition your head over your shoulders and takes pressure off those joints.

These small habits won’t fix everything, but they slow down the pattern. They give your body a break.

Now, if you’ve been dealing with this tension for weeks or months — or if it’s starting to come with headaches, arm tingling, or it’s affecting your sleep — that’s your body telling you something more is going on. That’s when it’s really worth coming in for an evaluation. At Catalyst Chiropractic And Rehab, we look at the whole picture. We assess your posture, your spinal alignment, how your joints are moving, and what’s contributing to your specific symptoms. Then we build a plan that actually addresses the root cause — not just the pain.

You don’t have to just live with this. A lot of people assume neck and shoulder tension is just part of having a desk job. And I’m here to tell you — it doesn’t have to be.

Thanks so much for tuning in today. If this resonated with you, or you’ve got someone in your life who complains about that afternoon neck ache, share this with them. And if you’re ready to find out what’s actually going on in your spine, we’d love to see you here at Catalyst Chiropractic And Rehab in Blaine. You can reach us through our website or give us a call — we’re here to help. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn, and I’ll talk to you next time. Take care of yourselves out there.
