Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn from Catalyst Chiropractic and Rehab here in Blaine, Minnesota — and today we’re talking about something that can genuinely change the way you feel every single day. We’re talking about your morning routine.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. “Doctor Vaughn, I’m not a morning person.” And that’s okay. This isn’t about waking up at five in the morning and running ten miles before sunrise. This is about setting your body up to win — so that by the time you get to work, or get the kids to school, or sit down at your desk, you’re not already running on empty.

Here’s the thing — how you start your morning has a huge impact on your posture, your energy, your pain levels, and even your mood throughout the day. And most of us are starting our mornings in ways that are quietly working against us.

So let’s talk about that.

The first thing I want you to think about is what happens in those first few minutes after you wake up. Most people grab their phone immediately. They’re scrolling, reading emails, checking the news — and they’re doing all of this with their neck bent forward and their shoulders rounded. And they haven’t even gotten out of bed yet. That position puts a tremendous amount of stress on the cervical spine — that’s your neck — and it sets a tense, compressed tone for your whole body first thing in the morning.

What I’d encourage instead is to give yourself just two or three minutes before you reach for that phone. Take some slow, deep breaths. Do a few gentle stretches right there in bed — nothing fancy. Bring your knees to your chest, roll your shoulders back, turn your head slowly side to side. These small movements help your spine wake up gradually and get some fluid moving into the joints after a long night of stillness.

Now, the second thing I want to highlight is hydration. This one is simple, but people underestimate it all the time. When you wake up, your body has been going six, seven, eight hours without water. Your spinal discs — the cushions between the vertebrae in your back — they actually rehydrate overnight, and they depend on you drinking enough water throughout the day to stay healthy. Starting your morning with a full glass of water before you do anything else is one of the easiest things you can do to support your spine and your overall energy levels.

Here’s what’s interesting — a lot of the fatigue and stiffness people feel in the morning isn’t just from sleeping. It’s from dehydration. So try it. Glass of water, first thing. It sounds too simple, but it works.

The third piece — and this one is big for my patients — is how you sit or stand during that first hour of your day. Whether you’re eating breakfast, drinking coffee, or already at a computer, your posture in that first hour really matters. Try to sit with your back supported, your feet flat on the floor, and your screen or whatever you’re looking at close to eye level. If you’re standing in the kitchen making breakfast, think about not leaning over the counter with a rounded back. Small adjustments like that reduce the cumulative stress your spine takes on throughout the day.

Now here’s some practical advice you can start using today. Set your phone across the room at night so it’s not the first thing you reach for. Keep a glass of water on your nightstand. Spend just two minutes stretching before you stand up. And be intentional about your posture during that first hour. None of this takes a lot of time. It just takes a little awareness.

And if you’re waking up stiff and achy most mornings — if your back or neck is sore before the day even gets started — that’s a signal worth paying attention to. Morning pain and stiffness that doesn’t resolve quickly can be a sign that something in your spine needs some support. That’s exactly what we’re here for.
