Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Bob Vaughn of Catalyst Chiropractic And Rehab in Blaine, Minnesota addresses one of the most common questions he receives — is chiropractic care really appropriate for infants?

Dr. Vaughn breaks down the science and reasoning behind gentle chiropractic adjustments for newborns and babies, helping parents understand what the process actually looks like and why so many families seek it out.

If you’ve ever raised an eyebrow at the idea of adjusting a baby, this episode will give you a fresh, informed perspective straight from an experienced chiropractor.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Bob Vaughn with Catalyst Chiropractic and Rehab here in Blaine, Minnesota, and today we’re talking about something that I know raises a lot of eyebrows — chiropractic care for infants.

I get it. When people hear that, they immediately think… wait, you’re adjusting babies? And I completely understand that reaction. But stick with me here, because by the end of this episode, I think you’re going to see this in a whole new way.

So let’s start with the why. Why would a baby ever need to see a chiropractor?

Here’s the thing that most people don’t realize — being born is hard work. And I mean that literally. The birthing process, even a smooth and uncomplicated one, puts a significant amount of physical stress on a newborn’s body. Think about it. That tiny little spine and neck go through a lot of tension and compression during delivery. And when you factor in things like a long labor, the use of forceps or vacuum assistance, or a cesarean birth — that stress on the baby’s neck and spine can be even greater.

Now, I’m not here to alarm anyone. Most babies come through birth just fine. But sometimes that physical stress can cause subtle misalignments in the spine — what we call subluxations — and those can affect how the nervous system is functioning. And here’s why that matters. In those early weeks and months of life, the nervous system is doing an enormous amount of work. It’s regulating everything — sleep, digestion, feeding, immune function. So when there’s interference in that system, parents sometimes notice things like trouble breastfeeding, excessive fussiness, difficulty sleeping, or recurring ear discomfort.

Now, I want to be clear. Chiropractic care doesn’t treat those conditions directly. What we do is look at the spine and nervous system, identify areas of tension or misalignment, and gently address them. When the nervous system can communicate more freely, the body often functions better on its own. That’s the whole idea.

Let me talk for a second about what an infant adjustment actually looks like — because I think this is where people have the biggest misconception.

It is nothing like what you see when an adult gets adjusted. There’s no twisting, no popping, no cracking. When I work with an infant, I’m using very gentle, sustained fingertip pressure. We’re talking about the amount of pressure you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. That’s it. It’s soft, it’s slow, and most babies sleep right through it. Some of them actually seem to enjoy it. Parents often tell me they’re amazed by how calm their baby is during the visit.

So what can you do at home while you’re figuring all this out? A few simple things. First, be mindful of how you’re holding and carrying your baby. Supporting the head and neck properly makes a real difference. Second, if you’re noticing that your baby consistently turns their head to one side more than the other, or seems uncomfortable in certain positions, make a note of that. Those are things worth mentioning to a professional. And third, trust your instincts as a parent. If something feels off, it’s always okay to get a second opinion.

Now, if you have a newborn or a young infant and you’ve been noticing any of those things we talked about — the fussiness, the feeding struggles, the sleep issues — I’d really encourage you to come in for an evaluation. There’s no pressure, no commitment. We just take a look, have a conversation, and figure out together whether chiropractic care might be a good fit for your little one.
